Importance of a Well Written Meta Description for Your Webpage

Updated on January 31, 2014

Meta description is a regular SEO element for a webpage and in the earlier days of SEO, the Meta Descriptions along with the Title and Meta Keyword tags formed the most important elements that influenced the search engine rankings for any website. People started manipulating the Meta and Title elements in such a way to get better search engine rankings that Google finally had to put a break on the authority or influence of Meta tags towards the improvement of search engine rankings. Ultimately the trend of getting better search engine ranking by adding keywords and phrases in the Meta elements almost came to an end with the major search engine such as Google.

Even though other search engines still uses the meta elements to rank website, Google has made it clear that Meta elements no more have a great influence towards getting better search engine ranking for a webpage. But that doesn't mean that Google has completely ignored the Meta elements and especially the Meta description tag. Even though Meta description tag does not helps you in getting improved search engine ranking, it can surely help you in a lot in getting more visitors to your website.

You might have noticed that Google shows description snippets in its search results and this snippet is mainly related to the search term you have searched for and its matching content in the website. The search engine first searches for the matching content in the meta description and displays that content snippet in the search engine results page. In case it does not find the related content in the meta description area, then it will look for the same in the content of the website and display the relevant content in the search results page.

So it is not at all a wise idea to ignore and totally remove the meta descriptions from your website and if written in the best and professional ways, the meta tags can really be a great asset for your website. I have seen a lot of website experiencing increase in their website traffic or click through ratio (CTR) after rewriting and improving their meta description. This is mainly due to the way the meta description is written and most of the time the meta description in this case will have a strong call to action effect.

There are a lot of advantages / benefits of making a creative meta description with a call to action manner. In majority of the times, the meta description will be seen to the visitors who searches for anything on the search engines and the more better your description is, the higher will be chances of the visitors clicking and entering your website. Here are some of the major importance and benefits of creating a call to action meta description for your webpages.

1) Get more clicks.
Ensure more clicks on your website listings in the search engine results page or in technical term, it will help to improve the overall click through ratio (CTR) of your website's listing in search engine results pages.

2) More potential visitors.
If you write a creative and relevant meta description, only visitors interested in your website's services will click on the link to visit your website and thereby you will be getting more targeted and potential visitors on your website.

3) Clearly Speak About Your Webpage
A well written meta description can clearly speak about the services or offer mentioned in your webpage and this itself is enough to grab the attention of visitors.

4) More leads and sales.
If your meta description is well written with a strong call to action strategy, then you will be getting more clicks into your webpage. A portion of the visitors that visits your website might leave an enquiry or even purchase something from your site and this can be increased if your meta description can fine tune the most potential visitors onto your website.

So if you are not at all using meta description for optimizing your website, then it is highly recommended to use them wisely and take your website traffic / visits to the next level with a great flow of relevant potential visitors. Meta descriptions still have a huge importance in SEO activities and is considered as one of the major onpage optimization factors and cannot be taken lightly.
